A SURVEY OF HEALTH PROBLEMS AFFECTING THE AGED IN ONITSHA NORTH L.G.A OF ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out the health problems of the aged in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. The components of the study include the physical, emotional, mental and social health problems of the aged in Onitsha North Local Government Area. The descriptive survey research design was used and sample of 300 out of the total population of 1300 of aged people were selected using simple random sampling. The instrument used was a validated self-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used for analysis a criterion mean (X) of 2.50 was used for the study. Mean scores of 2.50 and above were considered as what constituted the health problems of the aged in Onitsha North Local Government Area for reliability of the instrument a test and retest reliability coefficient of 0.96 was obtained the following. The findings of the study include the following; the majority of the aged in Onitsha North Local Government Area are affected by physical health problems, the majority of the aged in Onitsha North Local Government Area are affected by emotional health problems, the majority of the aged in Onitsha North Local Government Area are affected by mental health problems, and that most aged in Onitsha North Local Government Area are mostly affected by the social health problem of the aged and I was recommended that the state government should look into the affairs of the aged as well as providing specialist for them for routine check-up.
